A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line constructed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The development of both rail lines was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also sparked ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This halt was proposed pending a thorough safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
