Multiple Affected as In-Flight Disturbance Hits A Delta Airlines Flight Landing at Sydney
Multiple passengers and crew sustained injuries when a Delta aircraft originating in Los Angeles to Sydney was hit by significant turbulence Friday morning.
Flight DL41 "went through a short bout of rough air" as it landed at Sydney Airport, a representative for the carrier informed. A number of the onboard staff sustained injuries.
Emergency medical services reported they treated five patients, and transported three of them to the hospital with minor injuries that comprised spinal discomfort and headaches. Those affected spanned from their 30s to 70s.
The event represents the latest incident of aircraft experiencing severe turbulence, with experts saying that shifting climate patterns is a key driver.
On board were 245 passengers and fifteen staff members on the Airbus A350, the representative said, adding that the plane landed "without further incident" at the airport at 06:48 local time on Friday.
Paramedics indicated they received a call just only 180 seconds prior to the plane landed, and response teams were waiting on the tarmac.

In-flight turbulence is fairly routine on aircraft journeys, and while instances of strong or severe turbulence are reportedly becoming more frequent, they are still very rare.
Data suggests that there are an estimated five thousand cases of severe-or-greater turbulence annually, out of a total of more than 35 million flights that are conducted around the world.
